Why IXTAbox?

What are the benefits of an IXTAbox?

Designed in Sweden, IXTAbox makes it easy for families who love outdoor sports like skiing and kitesurfing to access their gear. Its aerodynamic and quiet design offers a smoother travel experience compared to rooftop boxes, helping you go further. You only need a towing hook for installation, and setting it up is simple.

How does IXTAbox compare to other backboxes or rooftop boxes?

IXTAbox is built to be versatile, sturdy, and longer-lasting than most other products on the market. Beyond its ease of use, you'll notice a significant improvement in your quality of life, especially during long drives. Its shape and position ensure quiet operation even at high speeds, while also reducing fuel consumption. Unlike many competitors made from plastic or fragile fibreglass, the IXTAbox is crafted from sustainable, recyclable materials like saltwater-resistant aluminium and acid-resistant stainless steel, making it tougher and more durable.

Does an IXTAbox weigh more or less than a rooftop box?

IXTAbox weighs about the same as other rooftop boxes of similar size. In some cases, it's even lighter, all while maintaining its sturdy design and high-quality materials.

Can I fit my skis in an IXTAbox?

Yes, IXTAbox is designed to accommodate skis. Our 2024 model fits most ski sizes, depending on the model and length you choose. Even longer skis can fit by placing them diagonally in the box.

Safety

How does the IXTAbox not tilt while driving and turning?

The patented towing hook fixture features two half-dome-shaped metal pieces that securely enclose the head and part of the shaft of the hook. This design keeps IXTAbox stable and prevents tilting under normal conditions.

Does a fully packed IXTAbox affect driving performance and grip?

Both IXTAbox and tow bars are built to handle more than their stated weight, but for safety and to extend the life of your IXTAbox, we recommend evenly distributing the approved maximum payload in the backbox. Place heavier items near the car and in the center of the box. Overloading the IXTAbox can reduce steering and front-wheel traction, especially in front-wheel-drive cars.

How does driving in reverse work while using an IXTAbox?

If your car has rear sensors, they will detect the IXTAbox and indicate that something is behind you. As a result, the sensors won't function to assist you when reversing, so be extra careful and rely on your mirrors and, if available, the backup camera. In most cars, the reverse camera is located above the license plate, providing a good view behind the vehicle.

If you drive a Tesla, you can even keep the rear camera on while driving to monitor how IXTAbox performs on the road.

Can I use an IXTAbox that is wider than the car?

Yes, in most European countries it is allowed to attach trailers to your towing hook that are up to 2.6m wide with a normal car. We recommend you check out your local requirements.

In cases where a trailer or equipment is wider than your car, you must mount white lights and/or reflexes towards the front near the edges of the trailer.

IXTAbox provides red reflexes and back lights (LED light models), plus in custom larger models we provide the white reflexes.

Using a wider box than your car adds extra wind drag resistance, which reduces driving range. Moreover, as a driver, you must be more vigilant towards your surroundings.

Which IXTAbox is right for me?

What sizes are available and what if I need a different seized IXTAbox?

We offer IXTAbox in various sizes. Our recommended lengths are 190cm and 210cm, while the heights we offer are 38cm and 45 cm.

In case you are looking for another size, do not hesitate to contact us.

Can I choose my IXTAbox’s colour look?

You can order your IXTAbox with any colour you want within the RAL colour scheme. Make sure to choose this add-on when ordering your IXTAbox.

Can I open the rear door of the car while using an IXTAbox?

In most cases, yes, you can. However, it depends on your car type and the IXTAbox height you choose. You can use our Box Guide to measure your car, or feel free to contact us for advice on the best IXTAbox size for you.

Taking care of my IXTAbox

How does an IXTAbox handle road salt, dirt, traffic conditions and galvanic corrosion?

IXTAbox is made from saltwater-resistant aluminum and acid-resistant stainless steel, designed to handle normal wear and tear from regular traffic. Built in Sweden, it's made to withstand the harsh Scandinavian climate. While some materials can cause galvanic corrosion, the alloyed metals used in the IXTAbox prevent this under normal conditions.

Aluminum naturally reacts with oxygen, forming a protective white layer called aluminum oxide. This patina, which may cause the box to appear whitish over time, protects the underlying material. Avoid contact with strong acids or alkaline substances, as they can corrode aluminum. To maintain the finish, simply rinse with fresh water. If exposed to strong acids or alkaline substances, clean the box immediately with fresh water.

How do I wash my IXTAbox?

The best way to clean your IXTAbox is by hosing it down with water. If it needs extra cleaning, you can use regular household detergent, but avoid using strong acidic products.

Is IXTAbox water-tight?

The IXTAbox is not fully waterproof, but it has rubber seals that minimize the entry of dust and water. While it's designed for usability and frequent rough use, we can't guarantee it will be watertight in all situations. It also has drainage holes for easy cleaning. In snowy conditions, some snowflakes may get inside due to wind turbulence behind the car.
